YOUTH DAYS OF SERVICE

  • Day of Caring
    (September)
  • Hundreds of volunteers from local companies and organizations take part in this very special day of service through United Way's Volunteer Center. Be part of a youth team and work on a project after school.
Beach Sweep
(September)
United Way's Volunteer Center teams up with the Lake Michigan Federation to bring you this unique service opportunity. Spend some time beautifying West Michigan’s beautiful lakeshore and help collect valuable environmental data.

Rake a Difference
(October)
For several years, we have coordinated teams of young people to rake yards for community members. This is just one example of how a simple task and a small amount of time can make all the difference to someone in need.
Serve Day
(June)
United Way's Volunteer Center teams up with area youth groups and First Priority of the Lakeshore to bring you this very special day of service. Teams of students work on several projects for area seniors throughout the afternoon as they demonstrate their pledge their “Love Thy Neighbor.”

SERVICE LEARNING PARTNERSHIPS
There is proof that encouraging, motivating and rewarding youth volunteerism is more successful than mandating their involvement. As educators, you set the best example.

How We Help
We assist teachers as they work to bring philanthropy and civic engagement into our schools. We believe it’s essential for young people to learn about their impact on society. Learn more about how we help schools, teachers, students and youth groups.

Michigan Student Service Award
We recognize student’s efforts and have partnered with local schools to offer the Michigan Student Service Award. This award was piloted in three schools for the 2003-2004 school year: West Ottawa High School, Black River High School and Spring Lake High School. To learn more, read through the Michigan Student Service Award Application.

Student’s United! Campaigns
PHILANTHROPY: Giving your time, talent or treasure for the greater good.

What’s Your Passion?
There’s no better way to teach philanthropy than to have students participate in their own United Way Campaign. In 2002, Grand Haven High School organized their first Student Service Learning Campaign and raised almost $3,000. They engaged in public speaking, marketing, persuasive writing and basic accounting activities. In the spring, students served in our Community Investment process and helped decide how money raised would be distributed. In 2003, an anonymous donor agreed to double the money raised by students in the Tri-Cities area up to $5,000. We are excited by this challenge and look forward to seeing more Student Service Learning Campaigns in other local schools.

There are many different ways to do a campaign in or outside your classroom. If you are interested in coordinating or helping with a campaign in your school, we would love to hear from you.
