Building Successful Boards Seminar

April 1, 2004 - On April 23, 2004 from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m at the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District, there will be a Building Successful Boards interactive workshop for nonprofit directors, current board members and potential board members. Greater Ottawa County United Way & Volunteer Center is sponsoring this event in partnership with the Holland Area Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Holland, Zeeland Chamber of Commerce, Allendale Area Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber of Commerce Grand Haven, Spring Lake, Ferrysburg.

“I believe this is a must attend for anyone who is a board member or contemplating sitting on a board. This will let nonprofit executive directors know what they’re board will be expecting so that everyone is on the same page.” Says Cindy Pocock, Director of Leadership Holland with Holland Area Chamber of Commerce.

The Building Successful Boards seminar is an interactive workshop designed to help current and potential board members and executive directors of nonprofits clarify board roles and responsibilities, enhance leadership skills and understand expectations. There will also be a “Board Members Perspective” roundtable for attendees to meet and have dialogue with several of our areas seasoned board members and

“The Building Successful Boards workshop is a must attend for current board members, executive directors or for those thinking about board membership in their future.” Says Adam Twa, Program Coordinator for Greater Ottawa County United Way & Volunteer Center. “A trained board member leads to a more effective board whose governance is critical to the well-being of agencies in our community.”

Program presenter Dale R. Rietberg, M.B.A., J.D. and attorney with Varnum Riddering Schmidt & Howlett, LLP will speak on the topic of “Basic Board Roles and Responsibilities.” Rietberg practice focuses primarily on small and emerging businesses, and on nonprofit and tax exempt organizations. Dale also serves as a volunteer director or trustee of several different area nonprofit organizations. Keynote speaker Patrick Thompson, Chief Executive Officer of Trans-Matic Manufacturing will speak on “The Importance of Board Leadership” during his keynote address. Thompson sits on several boards in the Holland and West Michigan area.

2008 DAY OF CARING September 18, 2008
More than 600 community members from area businesses, schools, churches and service organizations will perform service projects at approximately 70 sites throughout Ottawa County, coordinated by Greater Ottawa County United Way’s Volunteer Center. This is a way for individuals and organizations to give back to our community and extend a helping hand to our neighbors in need—in short, to LIVE UNITED.
