United Way & Volunteer Center Looking for Community Investment Volunteers

March 9, 2004 - Greater Ottawa County United Way & Volunteer Center is on the look out for Community Investment Volunteers, volunteers from throughout Ottawa County, to serve on panels during the Community Investment process this spring. Volunteer panelists will make important decisions regarding the funding of necessary health and human service programs in Ottawa County. From now until April, United Way & Volunteer Center will be recruiting 2004 Community Investment Volunteers. All new and returning volunteers will be required to attend an orientation meeting.

“The most important thing for people to know is that community volunteers are the ones deciding where the community’s dollars should go.” Says Abby Reeg, Director of Community Investment for United Way & Volunteer Center. “Volunteers are trained to look at budgets, community need and the overall impact that each program has on our community to ensure that positive results are being made in key focus areas.”

Last year, over 100 volunteers from around the county volunteered with United Way & Volunteer Center during this Community Investment process (formerly referred to as Allocations). Volunteers represent the community area where they live and work, and sit on panels based on the focus area of their choice: Helping Kids Succeed, Strengthening Families, Fostering Self-Sufficiency, Empowering the Disabled and Promoting Independence for Seniors. A panelist’s time commitment could range from 2 to 3 mornings or evenings, depending on the focus area of choice.

“We are looking for people who are passionate about the quality of life in their community,” says Reeg. “We need volunteers who have some type of expertise to share (in one of the five focus areas, in finance, management, or human resources), who represent our county’s diversity (youth, adults, geographic areas, plus religious and ethnic backgrounds) and can commit to attending the meetings they sign-up for.”
