Harbor Industries Proves Dedication
to Organization and Community
October 1, 2003 - Harbor Industries’
vision statement reads, “To be the preeminent
leader in our industry and community,” and they
are doing just that. Harbor Industries, a manufacturer
and creator of merchandising displays and fixtures continues
to take a leadership role in the Grand Haven community.
On top of being a United Way & Volunteer Center
supporter, having a growing workplace volunteer program
and having a number of employees sitting on boards of
local health and human service organizations, Harbor
has taken yet another step as a leader in our community.
Joan Mack, Vice President of Human Resources for Harbor
Industries, has been granted a leave of absence to help
Greater Ottawa County United Way & Volunteer Center
carry on their mission—Improving lives by mobilizing
the caring power of our community.
“We have been a family owned and operated business
for over 50 years.” says Tim Parker, President
of Harbor Industries and United Way & Volunteer
Center board member. “We pride ourselves on how
dedicated our employees are to the communities in which
they live. Our work in the community goes beyond what
Harbor Industries does as a company and really focuses
on what our employees do as individuals, where they
are committed and the good works that they do.”
Harbor has seen their employees volunteer efforts in
our community soar. Many employees, after volunteering
out in the community as a company team, get attached
to the organization that they volunteered for and find
themselves volunteering with that agency outside of
work and on a long term basis.
“Many of our employees after working at an agency
through our workplace volunteer program, see and feel
the effect that the particular agency and even themselves
can have on someone’s life, that they soon find
themselves sitting on the board of that agency and commiting
themselves to a cause.” Says Parker. “As
an employer, it gives me great pleasure and makes me
very proud to hear stories of how our employees go back
to someone’s house on the weekend to patch a leaky
roof at a house that they had done some other maintenance
work on earlier that week. They really take these projects
to heart and treat the people that they help as if they
are a long time family friend.”
“Harbor Industries is a true leader in our community.”
Says Lara MacGregor, Volunteer Center Director. “We
use Harbor as an example, for other companies to show
how a company can execute a workplace volunteer program.
Not only does the company feel more connected to the
community, but it builds the team morale and helps make
the employees feel more connected. We have also seen
their employee campaign for United Way & Volunteer
Center triple since their employees have gotten more
involved and connected with their community. They are
better educated on the needs of our community.”
Tim Parker has also had an instrumental part in United
Way & Volunteer Center as an organization. Serving
on the board for 4 years now, Tim played an intimate
role in the merger of the four historic United Ways
in helping the organization to maintain it’s local
feel.
